Understand the NFL Spread Market
A point spread posts one team as the favorite (shown with a minus sign, like -6.5) and the other as the underdog (shown with a plus sign, like +6.5). Back the favorite and they must win by more than that margin; back the underdog and they just need to stay within it or win outright. The standard price on both sides is
-110, meaning a $110 wager returns $100 in profit. That ten-dollar gap is called the juice, and it is how sportsbooks build their margin into each game. Most NFL spreads open Sunday night or Monday after the previous week's results and can move several points before kickoff. A line that opens at -3 and closes at -5.5 tells you the market has
seen significant action on the favorite. Watching that movement — and understanding why it happened — is one of the more useful habits a serious football bettor develops.
